Dining Table Size Guide: Dimensions & Seating Chart
Last updated: June 2026
To size a dining table, start with two rules and your room. Allow at least 2 feet (24 inches) of table edge per person for elbow room, and keep a minimum of 36 inches between the table and every wall so chairs can pull out and people can pass. Then match the table to the room: in a small room (about 8' x 10'), a 3-4' round or square table seats 4-6; in a medium room (10' x 12'), a 5-6' rectangular or oval table seats 6, or a 4-5' round table seats 4-8; in a large room (12' x 14' or more), a 6-8' rectangular or oval table seats 8-10, or a 5-6' round table seats 6-10. Round tables ease conversation and fit tighter spaces, rectangular and oval seat the most, and square suits compact, even rooms. The full seating chart is below.
How many people fit at each table size?
Use this as a starting point. Counts show a full table; allow about 2 feet per person for comfortable seating.
| Shape | Size (length or diameter) | Seats |
|---|---|---|
| Rectangular | 4' | 4 |
| Rectangular | 5-6' | 6 |
| Rectangular | 7' | 8 |
| Rectangular | 9'+ | 10+ |
| Square | 3-4' | 4 |
| Square | 5-6' | 8 |
| Oval | 8' | 8-10 |
| Oval | 9' | 10-12 |
| Round | 3' | 4 |
| Round | 4' | 4-6 |
| Round | 5' | 6-8 |
| Round | 6' | 8-10 |
Oval tables up to 7 feet long seat the same number of people as a rectangular table of the same length.

What size table fits my dining room?
Match your table to the room so there's space to seat guests and still move around:
| Room size | Recommended table | Seats |
|---|---|---|
| Small - about 8' x 10' | Round or square, 3-4' diameter | 4-6 |
| Medium - about 10' x 12' | Rectangular or oval 5-6', or round 4-5' | 6 (rect/oval); 4-8 (round) |
| Large - 12' x 14' or more | Rectangular or oval 6-8'+, or round 5-6' | 8-10 (rect/oval); 6-10 (round) |
How much space does each person need?
Plan for at least 2 feet (24 inches) of table edge per place setting. That's enough for a plate, glasses, and elbows, plus room to slide a chair out without bumping the person beside you. On a rectangular or oval table, a common approach is to put armchairs at the two ends and armless chairs along the sides - it looks balanced and the armless chairs tuck in to save space.
How much clearance do I need around the table?
Leave a minimum of 36 inches between the edge of the table and the nearest wall or piece of furniture. That's the space a chair needs to pull out with someone sitting in it, plus a path to walk behind. If a doorway or a buffet sits along one side, give that side a little more. Skimping here is the most common dining-room mistake - a table that technically fits can still feel cramped if there's nowhere to move.
Round, square, rectangular, or oval?
Round tables make conversation easy because everyone can see everyone, and with no corners they're forgiving in tight or square rooms. Square tables suit compact, evenly proportioned rooms. Rectangular and oval tables seat the most people and suit longer rooms - and an oval softens the look while seating about the same as a rectangular table of the same length. If your needs change - everyday meals for a few, holidays for many - look at an extension table or one with a leaf, which lets a single table do both jobs.
How to measure your dining room
Measure the room's length and width, then subtract the clearance you need (36 inches on each occupied side) to find the largest table footprint that will actually work. Account for doorways, a buffet or hutch, and the swing of any doors. The guide below walks through it, and you can download a printable version (PDF) to take to the room with a tape measure.
