Fjords Recliners, Relaxers and Sofas
Scandinavian-designed seating from Norway, shaped around the way you sit.
Our story
A Norwegian family workshop that became a seating specialist
Fjords seating is made by Hjellegjerde, a family company founded in 1941 by brothers Otto and Mindor Hjellegjerde in Sykkylven, Norway. It began as a small workshop and grew into an international manufacturer.
The designs draw on Norwegian nature and Scandinavian simplicity, with an emphasis on ergonomic comfort. The line today spans recliners, swing relaxers, lift chairs, reclining sofas and sleeper sofas.
Retreat Home Furniture has carried Fjords since 2013.

Compare sizes side by side
Every model has its own seat and back mold, so width, depth and seat height vary from chair to chair. Our size guide compares them all, and lets you filter by the width and depth of the space you have.

Room to recline
The Fjords product sheets list the distance from the wall to full recline for most swing relaxers. You will find it in the size guide.
Why it sits differently
How Fjords is built
A few details explain why a Fjords chair feels different from a typical recliner.

Molded, cold-poured foam
Fjords uses molded, cold-poured foam for the cushions in most of its recliners. Two liquid parts are poured into a shaped mold, expand to fill it, and set around the steel tubular frame. It costs more and takes longer than shaping foam by hand, and it is the standard in contract-grade upholstery.
Already in its comfort position
Molded foam has its curves built in, so it supports your body from the first sit. Fjords says it keeps its shape for 10 to 15 years or more.
A mold for every model
Each model has its own molds, with different widths, heights and lumbar support. That is why one Fjords chair can feel quite different from the next, and why a size guide helps.
Steel frame and mechanisms
Cushions are molded around a steel tubular frame. The metal frame and steel mechanical functions carry a 10-year warranty.
Active Release System
Fjords' Active Release System provides continuous support while you recline.
Leather and fabric
Top-grain leathers and upholstery fabrics in a range of colors. Leather is a natural material, so it weathers and stretches with use and wears differently from model to model.
Fjords warranty
What the Fjords warranty covers
| Term | What is covered |
|---|---|
| 10 years | The metal frame and all steel mechanical functions in the Comfort, Relax, Modern Living and Norsk collections. This does not include the reclining mechanism and power components of Relax and Modern Living. |
| 5 years | Molded foam, wood components, gas cylinders and all cables. Molded cushions are warranted against collapsing. Loss of foam resiliency is not the same as the softening that comes from normal wear. NordicREST sofas: no-sag springs and frame. |
| 3 years | Swing Relax and Modern Living reclining mechanisms and power components. NordicREST cushions and sleeper mechanisms. |
| 2 years | Leather or fabric covers. Leather is covered against wear-through or tearing only, and fabric against pilling or wear-through only. Not covered: soiling (especially from sweat and other body fluids), fading or color loss. This is not an unlimited warranty. |
| 1 year | Battery for the Modern Living collection. |
Warranty claims go through the dealer you purchased from. Fjords and Hjellegjerde work with the dealer to replace a covered component that has failed. Terms effective January 17, 2025.
Questions
Fjords questions, answered
What is the difference between the Fjords collections?
Relax covers motion and powered recliners, swing relaxers and lift chairs. Comfort is the traditional recliner line. Modern is contemporary recliners and relaxers, including battery-powered models. Norsk is contemporary, design-forward chairs and sofas, and NordicREST is sleeper sofas.
How do I choose between sizes?
Many models come in two sizes, and the dimensions vary from model to model. Use the size guide to compare width, height, depth and seat height, and to filter by the width and depth of your space.
How much wall space does a Fjords relaxer need?
The Fjords product sheets list 14 inches from the wall to full recline for most swing relaxers, including Crown, Dallas, Harstad, Helsinki, Jewel, Milan, Oslo, Paris, Rome, Stockholm and Urban. The size guide shows it model by model where the sheet lists it.
What is the difference between In Stock and Customize It?
Customize It pieces are made to order in the leather or fabric and base you choose. In Stock pieces are ready-made listings in set colors.
What does the Fjords warranty cover?
Ten years on the metal frame and steel mechanical functions, five years on molded foam, wood components, gas cylinders and cables, three years on swing relax and Modern Living reclining mechanisms and power components, two years on leather or fabric covers, and one year on the Modern Living battery. Claims go through the dealer you purchased from. The full table is above.
How do I care for Fjords leather?
Fjords recommends vacuuming with a soft brush attachment or dusting with a clean white damp cotton cloth, and cleaning once or twice a year with a mild detergent and lukewarm water or an approved leather product, followed by a leather-enriching conditioner. Do not use a microfiber cloth, solvent or abrasive cleaners. Keep leather out of direct sunlight and away from heat. Arm and neck rests take the most body oil and sweat.
Is leather supposed to show marks and color variation?
Yes. Natural markings, scratches and shading are signs of genuine leather, and the leather develops a patina over time. Leather also wears differently on different models, depending on the cushion shape and stitching.
How do I care for fabric?
Fjords recommends keeping fabric out of direct sunlight and bright reflections, removing dirt and dust regularly, and cleaning with a foam cleanser after testing it on a hidden area first.
